Hello everyone from beautiful, balmy Miami, Florida! We are almost there! All our flights worked out good, though I'm not sure we'll ever do a redeye flight ever again! How do people sleep sitting straight up, confined to an area approximately 3 inches square? So, we're feeling a bit punchy, been up for about 30 hrs straight, just got a ton of information, need food and sleep!! The flight leaves tomorrow at 1pm now, not 6am, so that's a good thing, too. The short version of all the info we got is that they still don't know if the Canadians can be on the flight tomorrow, but the general feeling is confident. There is a plan B involving helicopters... how cool would that be???
Everything still feels very unreal. At one point on the flight to Toronto, I looked around me and wondered "how did I get here?" I still feel like I'm going to wake up, roll over, and tell Garn about this crazy dream I had about going to Haiti! It feels very surreal to be here. It's very exciting to hear about all the people that have come, all the plans that are being made and all the supplies that are going - so many miracle stories already. There are at least 2 other nurses along in our group of 10, which is awesome!! I hope all our combined knowledge from different areas of work will add up to something totally amazing. So who knows what the next days bring. We are being met at the airport with a huge convoy of vehicles to handle all the supplies, and will have 4 armed escorts along. The route has been mapped out of the safest roads that they know are passable.
Nothing seems to happen without its own set of adventures, though. Today, we got into Miami airport, with nothing but a phone number to work with, and my cell does not work here. I need someone back home to go yell at telus for me!! Looks like we may be in need of a new cell phone when we get home, because not being able to work in any other country is a problem! But it all worked out - we were able to get some money for the pay phone and thankfully made contact on the first try! Well, I think I better sign off and take a nap before I'm incoherent. Rest assured we are well, and looking forward to seeing this country again that stole our hearts back in March!
Oh, one quick funny story - the American customs officer we got is Haitian. LOL!!!
