Well, last night vwe only got 7 inches of rain, so maybe it means the weather is improving? When it decides to rain here, WOW!
Yesterday the orphanage gained another baby. This one was brought here by the mother who just couldn't take care of it anymore. That's how lots of them come here. The furthest have come from Jeremie- a ten hour drive one way over roads that shouldn't be travelled. But at least they get a better life. Then they immediately go before a judge who really gives the mother the gears about what she is doing, and makes her aware that it can never be reversed. She signs some papers, and then step one is complete.
Yesterday, Michelle got to take care of her babies, and I got to go to Fort Jacque, to the site where the new orphanage is going to be. They started building about two years ago. First they built all the perimeter walls of the compound (about 4-1/2 acres), plus the main gate. All the walls are two feet thick, using rock and mortar, 10 feet high, then topped with a coil of razor wire. And that is exactly what it is, too. It will eat you alive, as John put it.
Next, they built a garage/shop. again the walls are all make of rock and mortar, 2 feet thick. all the rock for everything so far comes off of that property. Then they built a warehouse, also rock and mortar, but it is going to get converted over to a three room house once we work some kinks out of it. Brad and Lois moved here from Ellerslie Baptist church in edmonton, it's going to become their house.
First I will be painting the concrete ceilings and any inside concrete walls with a sealer/primer.
Then probably adding color yet to the walls. Meantime , John and Brad have to "fix" a few issues. The floor slopes the wrong way, and there's two inches of water where the bedroom is going to be.
If I get enough done ,I'll get to start on the tiling. Tile is the only viable option in this country. But I'm not sure if I'll get that far.
The guest house will be the next project, and then all the support facilities will be built. Hopefully in two years they will start on the main orphanage, which will house 200 kids.
