It's my (garn's) turn. I thought I'd write a bit about our experiences.
So security found us at the airport. They had a large sheet of paper with all of our names on it. There were five of us all on the same flight. Wehad met up in Fort Lauderdale. There was a single girl from the Winnipeg area, and a couple from Ithicus, New York who are adopting a little girl. So security took us out to our rides, and we will always be grateful for their help and guidance.
We headed up narrow streets full of vehicles. Ninety percent of the vehicles here are tap-taps. I'll try to post a good picture of one soon. There's almost no such thing as a tap-tap that's less than full to capacity. A tap-tap is a pickup truck with a canopy on the back, only the canopy is raised about three to four feet, giving extra headroom, so that you can fill it full of passengers- human, canine, or whatever. So really, the canopy only serves as protection from the sun or rain. We've seen people riding along on bumpers, and even one guy riding along by balancing on the hitch of a truck. We saw countless UN vehicles, ranging from tanks to pickup trucks, and big trucks hauling armed soldiers. We saw 2 tanks tucked into allies with soldiers peeking out the top with machine guns drawn. Generally speaking, travelling is safe, but there's really no rules to the road.
There's no center lines and if cars pull to the side, they pull on to the sidewalk. The only thing you'd get a ticket for is illegal parking and expired tags. Other than that, if you drive aggressively you get somewhere, if you don't, you go nowhere. As a general rule, you drive on the right, but even that is more of a suggestion than a rule. And they use their horns a lot. Yet, no one seems to get into accidents!
We just heard about the rain last night - we got almost 8 inches in 3-1/2 hours!!! So in defence of my blowing a glass siding door right out of it's tracks, it really did come down!!!
